In Memory of Ron Glass, receiving charity will include the Wooten Youth Center

In memory of Ron Glass, this year's receiving charity will be the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, a nonprofit youth center that provides free after school and low-cost summer programs for boys and girls in grades 3-12. Their goals include preparing the attending youth for college. Ron Glass played Shepherd Book in the Firefly / Serenity series. He passed away on November 25, 2016 due to respiratory failure. He was 71.

Ron was very proud of his work at the Wooten Center, an important part of his mission in life. Ron was a member of their board of directors since he walked in the door in 1992, serving as chairperson from 1993 to 2005. Ron's friend Ira Pelofsky introduced Ron to the center when both were seeking ways to make a difference after the civil unrest in 1992. Myrtle Faye Rumph (founder, in the photo with Ron) and the children had an impact on Ron. The result was 24 years of service helping the center purchase their current buildings, starting their annual dinner and golf tournament fundraisers, and serving as the catalyst for college-prep programming which continues today via SAT-prep workshops. Over the years Ron brought in donors including David and Elizabeth McFadzean of Wind Dancer Films, producer of The Cosby Show, and KROQ 106.
